Get Ready for the Kentucky Derby!!

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race that is 1.25 miles long for three year old thoroughbreds. It takes place every year at the Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. It is also known by many as the "run for roses" and the "most exciting two minutes in sports." Here are some fun/interesting quick facts about the Kentucky Derby:

•A horse coming out of post position number 15 has never won.

•The Kentucky Derby trophy is two feet tall and made out of 56 ounces of gold.

•Mint Julep is name of the Kentucky Derby's official drink.

Kentucky Derby May 1, 2010

It only lasts 2 minutes, but what a 2 minutes it is!!!
Well, "technically" anyway, the fun goes on all weekend and into the summer but as far as I'm concerned, it's ALL ABOUT THE HATS!!
Every day is a 'make it a say something special kind of a hat day' but there's nothing like a day at the races to bring out the best or present an opportunity to those who are a little shy about wearing a hat.
Hopefully, all of the wonderful compliments that wearing a hat invites will encourage these ladies to never leave the house without one!
The Kentucky Derby has never been canceled so, the rain didn't stop any of the fun! [There was some discussion during WWII but it never happened].
The show must go on!
I had SO much fun this year creating just the right hats, to match the perfect for the races outfits, that my passionate, stylish, moxie hat ladies of unequaled coolness chose to wear for this fabulicious event.

This post will be a work in progress as I am still waiting on more photos to be sent in but here are the First Over the Finish Line....

I thought I would send you a link for our photos from the Derby. As you may have seen , it rained, and poured, and the weather caved in... BUT the show must and did go on and I wore my dress, the hat and the shoes( rubber boots).
It was great and I got many compliments..I would have had more if the sun were shining and I was able to walk the paddock area!!! But here are some pictures attached and then I will send a link of my shots.

The Best Mother's Day!

Today was just the BEST Mother's Day. My Son and  Daughter-n-Law announced they were having another baby in December!
I was so blessed when my first granddaughter, Skyler Belle, came into the world and happier than a bird with a french fry, 10 years later, when Tatum Cecelia came along. Now, I'm just excited beyond belief that there will be 3.
Life is good. Thank you God!!

Wellspring's 12^th Annual Derby Preview Party is set for Tuesday, April 20, 2010 on Churchill Downs' Millionaires Row. This night of fast-paced fun has become a "signature event" of the Derby season. Attending will be a sell-out crowd of 500 community leaders, young professionals, doctors, business owners, and celebrities from the sports and horse racing worlds. This year's event is sure to be in the spotlight, as the three living Triple Crown winning jockeys – Jean Cruguet (Seattle Slew), Ron Turcotte (Secretariat) and Steve Cauthen (Affirmed) – have all accepted our invitation to attend! In addition, John Asher of Churchill Downs will be our Master of Ceremonies and Handicapper Extraordinaire Bill Doolittle will share his picks for Derby 136!

Wellspring, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, provides hope and recovery to adults challenged with severe and persistent mental illness. All
proceeds from this annual event go to support Wellspring's crisis, transitional and supported housing sites. Since 1982 Wellspring has helped over 4,000 people regain a meaningful quality of life. They assist people with severe mental illness; persistent depression and chemical dependency avoid homelessness, reduce hospitalizations, return to work and live a life of hope in the community. Wellspring is the only agency in this region that provides independent housing coupled with psychiatric rehabilitative services to those challenged by mental illness. He Gave Pumpkins A New Look!

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins; they're climbing the fence, the walls and usurping the entire yard of our home, attracting Valley wide attention as it did every year when Dad, aka "The Pumpkin Man", would transform the lowly vegetable into resplendent and ingenious works of art.

Dad's creations departed from the traditional Jack-o-Lantern, with its candle flickering through triangular eyes, nose and grinning mouth. In designing his pumpkin faces, he used autumn vegetables instead.

The eyes were usually gourds or turnips; parsnips for the mouth because they were easily bendable, and squash in assorted sizes for the ears and nose.

After everything was fastened in place with nails, a properly wielded paintbrush added more distinction and expression to the pumpkin face features.

Dad truly gave Halloween a new look! He would concoct anywhere from 100-175 pumpkin heads as part of a huge display on our front lawn that included a variety of scare crows, witches and a smoking cauldron.

His out-of-this-world treatment of the pumpkins not only thrilled the 4 of us kids and the children for blocks around, but children from all parts of the Valley who were brought by parents to witness the annual display.

On Halloween night, first-comers who rapped on our door, were favored with a gift of one of the elaborately decorated pumpkins as long as the supply lasted!

Every year, Dad would also turn his work to good purpose, or a purpose above that of delighting the hundreds of youngsters who visited our home.

He would deliver them to local hospitals, schools and churches. The Optimist Club would use them for money-raising projects to help the YMCA, Little League and Home for Boys, just to name a few.
